If you’re tired of using painful, temporary, and ineffective methods to remove annoying, unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be a better alternative. Fountain Laser Center’s Atlanta, Georgia, location performs laser hair removal right in our office.
What is laser hair removal? How does it work?
Laser hair removal is a noninvasive procedure that uses laser light energy to destroy unwanted body hair.
To understand how laser hair removal works, you need to understand how hair growth works first. Hair grows from hair follicles, which are tiny cavities found deep in the skin. Hair does not grow all the time; instead, it undergoes a three-phrase growth cycle:
- Anagen phase: hair actively grows from the follicle
- Catagen phase: hair stops growing, the follicle decreases in size, and the follicle breaks away from the dermal papilla, which supplies the follicle with nutrients
- Telogen phase: follicle reattached to the dermal papilla, then reenters the anagen phase
The laser emits energy that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and shaft (the hair itself). Pigments are what give skin and hair color, so the laser works to target certain pigments. Hairs in the anagen phase have the highest amount of melanin, a type of pigment found in hair and skin, which makes it possible for the laser to damage the hair. The damaged hairs fall out and the energy from the laser damages the hair follicle, resulting in a silky smooth appearance and less hair growth.
Hair follicles in the catagen or telogen phases of growth contain less melanin than those in the anagen phase. As a result, the light energy from the laser does not affect them.
Due to the growth cycle, you’ll have to go through follow-up treatments to make sure the hairs in catagen and telogen phases are removed every 2 to 3 months. Follow-up treatments may be needed more or less frequently depending on the hair’s location as well as how quickly your hair grows.
What happens after laser hair removal?
After the procedure, your skin may look red or be irritated. Thankfully the redness and irritation typically goes away after 1 or 2 days. You’ll want to use sunscreen to protect the skin as it heals and avoid using products that could irritate the skin. You should also avoid plucking, shaving, or waxing the treated area.
Why should I choose laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is less painful than waxing — most patients say it feels like a rubber band snapping against skin — and is less time-consuming than shaving. Unlike waxing and shaving, laser hair removal also slows hair growth and results in less hair growth overall. You won’t have to go in for as many treatments or shave as often thanks to laser hair removal.
